Scope and Content

Stanley Fuller Dole's U.S. Navy material including field maps, the bulk concerning Russia. Also includes Dole's autobiography, a personal history written for his Bowdoin 25th reunion, and a scrapbook of his high school and college years. There is correspondence and other printed material related to Dole's roles as Bowdoin College Alumni Fund director, Alumni Council member, and Overseer. Frequent correspondents include Harry Palmer, Chairman of the Sesquicentennial Fund, Seward Marsh, Alumni Secretary, and William Stewart Woodfill (Bowdoin Class of 1918).

Biographical/Historical Note

Stanley Fuller Dole was born on July 9, 1890, in Portland, Maine. He attended Portland High School and North Yarmouth Academy before graduating from Bowdoin in 1913. Dole served as an ensign in the U.S. Navy (1917-1921), was a member of the American Commission to Negotiate Peace (1919) and a member of the American Mission to Russia (1919-1920) during the Russian civil war between the Reds and the Whites. For his work in Russia he received two White Russian decorations, the Order of Saint Anne (3rd class) and the Order of Stanislav (2nd class). The bulk of Dole's business career (1921-1955) was spent with the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P). After retiring from A&P, Dole was Vice President of Olivet College in Michigan (1955-1958). He served as Bowdoin College Alumni Fund director (1944-1947), as a member of the Alumni Council (1947-1951), and as Overseer from 1951 until his death.

Dole died on October 4, 1962, survived by his wife, Valrosa Vail, whom he married in 1925, his son, Stanley F. Dole, Jr. (Bowdoin Class of 1947), two grandchildren, and a brother, Howard Dole.
