Scope and Content

This collection, compiled by Robert D. Gault in 1997, documents the family history and genealogy of the Garcelon family and closely related families such as the Ames and Chase families, chiefly from Lewsiton, Lisbon, and Harpswell, Maine. Letters, estate inventories, deeds, business records, genealogical notes, marriage certificates, photographs, and news clippings are included. Various members of the Garcelon family are also spotlighted, including Washington Garcelon, Mark Garcelon, Octavia Garcelon, Reverend Pierre Garcelon, and Dr. Alonza Garcelon. There is also a small cache of Civil War documents, especially letters pertaining to Julius M. Swain and his regiment.

Biographical/Historical Note

The Garcelon family originated from France before moving to the United States in 1752. The family of French Huguenots remained mostly in the Lewiston, Maine area.

Pierre Garcelon, was born in 1685. Before moving to London, Pierre served as Rector of St. Pierre du Bois on the Island of Guernsey from 1725 to 1772.

James Garcelon became the first Gercelon resident of Maine when he arrived in Lewiston in 1752. He made the journey from France as a cabin boy aboard a ship.

Alonzo Garcelon graduated from Bowdoin College in 1836 and then proceeded to go to the Medical College of Ohio. He served as the the surgeon general of Maine during the civil war and, in 1871, was elected governor of Maine.

Mark Garcelon was born in 1793 and died in 1850. Mark married Jane Ames.

His brother, Washington Garcelon, was born in 1809 and died in 1849. He lived in Harpswell, Maine.

Octavia Garcelon was born in 1865 and died in 1893. She lived in Lewiston, Maine.
