Biographical / Historical
The position of Assistant to the President for Multicultural Programs and Affirmative Action Officer originated with the appointment of Gayle Renee Pemberton in 1988 to the position of Director of Minority Affairs. In 1990, the office was renamed and Faith Alyson Perry was appointed Acting Director of Multicultural Affairs. In 1991, Betty C. Thompson (Betty Trout-Kelly) became Assistant to the President for Multicultural Programs. In 1994, the position was again renamed to Assistant to the President for Multicultural Programs and Affirmative Action Officer and now reports directly to the president.
This office is responsible for administering programs and policies dealing with affirmative action and multicultural affairs. The college's Affirmative Action Officer (AAO) is responsible for monitoring the recruiting, retention, hiring and promotion process, as well as campus programs and committee agendas that serve to advance affirmative action for students and employees. The Affirmative Action Officer also functions as an information resource on affirmative action and equal opportunity and is responsible for the monitoring and assisting in the implementation of the Affirmative Action Plan (1996).
