Scope and Content
The collection contains 586 sermons by father and son (1797-1898, n.d.), correspondence, most relating to Elijah Kellogg, Sr.,'s years with the Second and Third churches in Portland, undated manuscript drafts of essays and poetry by Elijah Kellogg, Jr., as well as a history of the Kellogg family. Also included are Elijah Kellogg, Sr.,'s journals of his Passamaquoddy missions (1821-1831), legal, financial, personal and religious materials, images, and clippings. There is also research material used by Wilmot B. Mitchell (Bowdoin 1890) for his 1903 book Elijah Kellogg, the Man and His Work. The papers are complemented by a collection of Elijah Kellogg, Jr.,'s published works.

Biographical/Historical Note
Both Elijah Kellogg, Sr., and his son Elijah Kellogg, Jr., were Congregational ministers with ties to Bowdoin College. The elder Kellogg (1761-1842) was a native of South Hadley, Massachusetts, a graduate of Dartmouth College (1785), and a soldier in the Revolutionary War. He was the first minister (1788-1811) of the Second Church in Portland, Maine, until a schism divided the church and part of the congregation left to form the Third Church, which Kellogg also served (1811-1821). After resigning his pulpit, Kellogg became a missionary to local Native Americans, keeping journals of his missions to Quoddy, Perry and Wells, Maine, including those to the Passamaquoddy tribe. He served Bowdoin as an overseer (1794-1798) and a trustee (1798-1824). Elijah Kellogg, Sr., married Eunice McLellan of Portland. Their son, Elijah Kellogg, Jr. (1813-1901; Bowdoin 1840), was a minister in Harpswell and Topsham, Maine (1844-1854 and 1871-1901); chaplain of the Seaman's Friends Society and pastor of Boston's Mariners' Church (1855-1865); and a popular lyceum lecturer. He is best remembered as the author of several successful series of juvenile adventure stories, including the Elm Island, Pleasant Cove and Whispering Pine series. He married Hannah Pearson Pomeroy and had three sons and one daughter.
