Scope and Contents

The Special Collections and Archives records document the activities and administrative operations of the George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives from its establishment through subsequent years. The collection provides insight into the processes, correspondence, and documentation associated with the department's role in managing and preserving archival materials. The records are organized into six series and include completed Call Slips, Reader Registration forms, and Requests for Duplication forms generated by patrons and staff of the department as well as correspondence between patrons and library staff regarding inquiries and responses related to special collections and archives. The records also consist of documentation of permissions requested and granted for the publication of materials from Special Collections & Archives along with transmittal forms detailing materials accessioned into the archives for permanent or temporary retention and records related to confidential destruction. The Chronological Files series consists of correspondence and memos concerning the day-to-day operations and administrative functions of the department while the Subject Files series features an alphabetical collection of files pertaining to events, programs, and publications produced by Special Collections & Archives. The collection captures the department's commitment to supporting scholarly research, ensuring access to rare and unique materials, and documenting its own institutional history.

The George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives was officially named during the library’s rededication ceremony in February 2002, honoring the distinguished statesman and alumnus George J. Mitchell. The department serves as the primary repository for the library’s rare books, manuscripts, and archival collections. Over the years, the department has played a pivotal role in preserving and providing access to unique and historically significant materials, supporting research, teaching, and public engagement. Its records reflect its evolution, administrative functions, and enduring mission to enhance scholarship and ensure the stewardship of cultural heritage.
