Typescript transcription of a recorded interview conducted with Everett Pope at Amelia Island, Florida, March 2001. The interview centers on Pope's student life at Bowdoin College, his experiences as a U.S. Marine in the Pacific theater during World War II, including the battle of Peleliu, and his award of the Medal of Honor

Biographical / Historical

Everett Pope was born in Milton, Massachusetts, on July 16, 1919. He was graduated magna cum laude from Bowdoin College in 1941 and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Pope joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1941 and served to the rank of major (1941-1945, 1950-1951). During World War II, he fought at Guadalcanal, New Britaina, and on Peleliu in the Pacific, and was awarded the Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, and the Medal of Honor for "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty." After the war, Pope had a career in business, serving for over 25 years as president and CEO of the Workmen's Co-operative Bank in Boston. Pope was a member of the Bowdoin College Alumni Council from 1955-1959; he served for 27 years on the governing boards of the College, including as an overseer (1961-1977), president of the board of overseers (1973-1977), trustee (1977-1988), and chair of the board of trustees (1984-1987). He was awarded an honorary degree by Bowdoin College in 1989. Pope and his wife Eleanor had two sons, Laurence E. Pope (Bowdoin 1967) and Ralph H. Pope (Bowdoin 1969). Everett Pope died on January 22, 2009
