Biographical/Historical Note
The Bowdoin College Music Press was co-founded by Bowdoin music professors Robert Beckwith and Elliott Schwartz in the 1960s and was administered by the Music Department. It published works commissioned by the College, works by members of the faculty, and works of prize winners in the Bowdoin College Contemporary Music Competition. Music by Elliott Schwartz, Ross Lee Finney, William Bolcom, David Burge, and others is included. Due to changes in music publishing and marketing - and the difficulty of carrying on business operations - the Music Press officially closed for business as of June 30, 2003; the closure process was completed in 2004 and rights were conveyed back to the composers.
