Scope and Content:

In the summer of 1959 Bowdoin received four grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to conduct Summer Institutes for secondary school teachers in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics. The four institutes ran concurrently from June 29 to August 8, and each offered credit towards a master's degree. In subsequent years, the number of grants as well as the specific focus of the institutes varied, but all provided additional training in the sciences to high school or college teachers. There were Advanced Science Seminars in Algebra for graduate and postdoctoral students of mathematics as well as NSF sponsored Academic Year Institutes for secondary school teachers of mathematics pursuing graduate study. In addition, there were summer programs for Undergraduate Research Participation in mathematics. Due to decreased funding from Congress, the NSF institutes at Bowdoin were discontinued after the summer of 1974. This series contains announcements and brochures for the institutes as well as director's reports for the mathematics institutes.
