Biographical/Historical Note
Bowdoin College institutes examine selected topics through a series of lectures and discussions. The Institute of Modern History held in April 1923 was the first institute conducted at the College. It was so successful that it was followed every two years by other institutes in various subject areas. In addition to these Biennial Institutes, the National Science Foundation (NSF) sponsored institutes at Bowdoin, the bulk held during the summer for secondary school teachers. Periodically other institutes, such as the 1961 Franco-American Institute and the 1983 James Bowdoin Institute, have been held on campus.
