Series Description:

From the Series:

The first institute to be conducted at Bowdoin College was the Institute of Modern History, April 16-28, 1923, which consisted of a series of lectures and conferences by authorities in the field of international relations. The lectures were open to the public, and were followed by conferences the day after the lecture that were open only to undergraduates. No attendance was taken at the conference, and faculty were not present. The first institute was so successful that every two years it was followed by other institutes on subjects of broad, general interest. The Biennial Institutes continued through 1968, but at times after 1941, more than two years passed between institutes. This series includes invitations, programs, correspondence, abstracts and text of some addresses, and newspaper clippings.
