Scope and Contents
This series contains records of the Bowdoin College Swimming Program. The series includes meet results for interfraternity, regional and national competitions. Complete records of the 1986 NEWISDA competition held at Bowdoin. Some subject files of coach Robert Miller are also included and correspondence. Majority of photos are team photographs but some action and awards photos are also included.
This series also contains results of intercollegiate swimming meets. Regular season, NEISA, NCAA, and special alumni and interfraternity competitions are all included. The bulk of the material is from the mid 1900s. Some individual event results are available, especially diving. A limited number of other regional competitions are also included. Series also consists of files and records from the swimming program. Correspondence with a variety of organizations, records of special activities and events held at the pool. Complete records of the 1986 New England Women's Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association meet held at Bowdoin. Also included are general records regarding the maintenance of the pool and facilities. This series contains photographs of the swimming teams, varsity, junior varsity, and freshmen for several years. The bulk of the photos are from the mid 1900s. Also included are photos of swimmers receiving awards and some action photos.

Biographical / Historical
The Bowdoin College Swimming Program started with the completion of the Curtis Pool in January 1928. The first season consisted of only interclass and interfraternity meets as well as one outside meet with the Augusta YMCA. The original team was coached by Donovan D. Lancaster, later director of the Moulton Union. The team began competing in intercollegiate meets in the 1928-29 season. By 1930 the team was competing in regional and national meets including NEISA and NCAA.
