The first issue, February 6, 1980, described To the Root as a political newsletter sponsored collectively by the Afro-American Society, the Bowdoin Energy Research Group, the Bowdoin Women's Association, and Struggle and Change. From late 1983 through 1995, the format of the publication changed several times and the publication was attributed to Struggle and Change, a student organization committed to increasing political awareness in the Bowdoin College community.
