Manuscript journal describing Josiah Pierce, Jr.'s tour of Europe from April 1849 to January 1850. Pierce travelled by ship from New York City to Portsmouth, England, and then toured around England, Scotland, Wales, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and France, visiting many locales on foot. Includes loose notes and an index of places visited, modes of transportation, and distances travelled.

Biographical / Historical
Josiah Pierce, Jr. (1827-1913) was born in Gorham, Maine, and was graduated from Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine, in 1846. Pierce was a lawyer in Portland, Maine, 1848-1855, and U.S. Secretary of Legation to Russia from 1855-1858.
