Scope and Content
Letters, diaries, journals, pamphlets, sermons, clippings and speeches from the personal papers of Rowland Bailey Howard. The correspondence is primarily from Howard to family members but also includes a significant number of letters to Rowland from his brother Oliver Otis Howard.

Biographical/Historical Note
Rowland Bailey Howard (1834-1892, Bowdoin Class of 1856), a Congregational minister, was a member of the U.S. Christian Commission during the Civil War; an associate editor and contributing correspondent of The advance, a Congregational journal, from 1875 to 1884; and secretary of the American Peace Society from 1884 until his death.
Howard was graduated from Bangor Theological Seminary in 1860 and served as pastor to Congregational churches in Farmington, Maine (1860-1870), Princeton, Illinois (1870-1875), East Orange, New Jersey (1875-1879), and Rockport, Massachusetts (1879-1884).
Howard married twice. His first wife, Mary Ellen "Ella" Patten (b. 1836), of Bath, died in 1871, leaving three children: David Patten Howard (b. 1861); Oliver Otis Howard, Jr. (1865-1944); and Francis Gilman Howard (1869-1937). Howard was married again, in 1873, to Helen J. Graves (1836-1932) of Farmington. They had two children: Ella Howard (1875-1964) and Rowland Sewall Howard (b. 1878).
Rowland Bailey Howard died in 1892 in Rome, Italy.
