Biographical/Historical Note
The Department of Government and Legal Studies at Bowdoin College integrates the objectives of a liberal arts background in government with the skills utilized in careers in teaching, public service, journalism, business and law. A major in the Government and Legal Studies includes nine courses from four possible specialties: American politics, Comparative politics, Political theory, and International relations. Students can also work towards an Independent study and an Honors Project by petitioning the department and recruiting an advisor to overlook the project. A minor consists of five courses from at least 3 of the four specialties. All courses must be taken with a grade option to count towards a major or a minor.
