Biographical / Historical

Richard Carney was born in Sheepscot, Maine, on November 21, 1884. He was graduated from Bowdoin College in 1907 and taught at the Stearns School in Mont Vernon, New Hampshire, 1907-1909. For a year following this, Carney served as supervisor and teacher of English in the public schools at Puerto Rico as well as an engineer, hired by the Puerto Rican government. In 1910, he was a research assistant at the nutrition laboratory of Carnegie Institute, Washington D.C. Carney was a chemist at W.F. Schrafft and Sons, Inc., Boston from 1911-1957 and director and vice-president of Boston Federal Savings and Loan Association from 1919-1958. He married Gretchen Horstmeyer in 1918 and they had three children; Carney died May 1, 1958.
