Biographical/Historical Note
In celebration of the 175th Anniversary of Bowdoin College's opening in 1802, the 175th Anniversary Campaign Program was announced in 1972 with a goal of $14.5 million within the next three years and $38 million within the next decade. Proclaiming that "the purpose is people," the college sought to increase financial aid for students, raise the salaries for faculty, support educational programs, maintain support for the Hawthorne-Longfellow Library, build the Visual Arts Center, renovate Hyde Hall, the Infirmary, and athletic facilities, and continue campus development. By the end of June 1981, the college had raised $38.7 million, surpassing its goal.
