The collection includes 10 journals from the Crocker Land Expedition, 1913-1917, by Maurice Tanquary. Includes almost daily entries during various months in his personal journal, measurements and notes on geographical position, interactions with Inughuit team members, lists of supplies and materials, hand sketched maps, natural and animal observations.

Biographical/Historical Note

Dr. Maurice Cole Tanquary (November 26, 1881 - October 25, 1944) was a professor of entomology, a member of the Crocker Land Expedition and is considered to be a pioneer in modern beekeeping. He grew up in Lawrenceville, Illinois and attended Vincennes University. He received his AB (1907), MA (1908), and PhD (1912) from University of Illinois, during which time he also served as an assistant to the state entomologist of Illinois. After earing his doctorate, he became a professor of agriculture at Kansas State Agricultural College; in 1913 he was given leave to join the Crocker Land Expedition, lead by Donald Baxter MacMillan, as a zoologist.

The Peary MacMillan Arctic Museum at Bowdoin holds other material from the Crocker Land expedition and mounted an exhibition in 2014.
