Scope and Content

Correspondence (1958-1962) from Albion Payson to his family written during his training in Illinois and his subsequent service with the US Navy on the USS Bennington in the Pacific Ocean. Payson writes about his naval training; his work onboard ship (USS Bennington) during deployment to California, Hawaii, Japan, and the Philippines; and his plans for the future. Also includes biographical newspaper clippings (1958-2011), and two USS Bennington yearbooks, 1961-1962.

Biographical Note

Albion L. Payson (1936-2011) was born in Portland, Maine. He was raised in Yarmouth, Maine and attended North Yarmouth Academy and Maine Central Institute before graduating from Bowdoin College in 1958 with a major in history. Upon his graduation, Payson enlisted in the United States Navy and served in the Pacific Ocean on the USS Bennington, traveling to California, Hawaii, Japan, and the Philippines, where he met and later married his wife, Susanna. After leaving active duty in 1962, Payson entered the Naval Reserves, serving until 1986 and achieving the rank of commander. Payson obtained his masters in mathematics from Penn State University and had a long career as a high school mathematics teacher.
