Scope and Content

Correspondence of Arthur C. Chadbourne, his sister, Helen E. Chadbourne, and mother, Emma Tuck Chadbourne, as well as a family photograph album. Most of the letters to Emma Tuck are from Amos Chadbourne, letters to Helen E. Chadbourne are chiefly from her mother, and the bulk of letters to Arthur C. Chadbourne are from his mother and other family members. The letters describe the daily activities of friends and family and comment on local and national events.

Biographical/Historical Note

Arthur Chase Chadbourne was born in Hallowell, Maine, on March 2, 1886, to Amos S. Chadbourne and Emma L. Tuck Chadbourne. Arthur prepared for college at Hallowell High School and was graduated magna cum laude from Bowdoin College with the Class of 1907. Following graduation he joined the International Banking Corporation and held positions in London, Mexico City, the Philippines, the West Indies, and Spain. Following the merger of the International Banking Corporation with National City Bank of New York, Chadbourne worked for National City in New York, returning to Hallowell in 1947.

On September 18, 1924, Chadbourne was married to Ida S. Holmgren. They had two children, Helen Ann and Arthur Chase, Jr. Predeceased by his wife, who died on October 4, 1950, Chadbourne died in Hallowell on August 6, 1951, survived by his children, one brother, Robert T. Chadbourne of Hallowell, and a sister, Miss Helen E. Chadbourne, also of Hallowell.
