Biographical/Historical Note
On July 31, 1987 the College announced the appointment of Thomas J. Hochstettler as Dean for Planning and General Administration, the first person to hold the new senior position. Hochstettler, a graduate of Earlham College, who earned his master's and doctoral degrees at the University of Michigan, came to Bowdoin from Stanford University where he was the senior associate and staff economist in Stanford's Office of Management and Financial Planning. As Dean for Planning and General Administration at Bowdoin, Hochstettler was responsible for planning and institutional research, and oversight of the Computing Center and Office of Special and Summer Programs. In addition, he carried substantial responsibility for the College's finances during a transitional period in the Treasurer's Office from November 1989 to September 1991. As Dean for Planning and General Administration, Hochstettler lead the effort to use collection and analysis of institutional data in management decisions. The creation of the Bowdoin College Health Plan in 1990, preparation of the 1991-1992 budget, and computing advances, were among the projects in which he was involved. Effective January 31, 1992, Hochstettler left his post at Bowdoin to become Director of Planning and Analysis for the University of Houston System. Since his departure, another Dean for Planning and General Administration has not been named.
