Biographical/Historical Note
Merton G. Henry was born in Hampden in Maine in 1926. He moved to South Portland at the beginning of World War II and attended South Portland High School. The first in his family to attend college, he was graduated from Bowdoin College as a member of Phi Beta Kappa in 1950. He received a law degree from George Washington Univeristy in 1955. He was awarded honorary law degrees from Bowdoin College, Northwood University, and St. Joseph's College. Henry helped to establish the Jensen Baird Gardener & Henry law firm in Portland. He also served on boards at Bowdoin, the Volunteer Law Project, Maine Medical Center, the Portland Museum of Art, and the Margaret Chase Smith Center. Throughout his life, he has been an active member of the Maine Republican Party working on the reelection campaign of Senator Fredreick Payne in 1958. He married Harriet Henry.
