Biographical/Historical Note
George E. Pettengill received his A.B. from Bowdoin in 1933, and was a librarian at several institutions, including the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. Samuel Vaughan (1720-1802) of London was a West India merchant and planter. He married Sarah Hallowell, daughter of Benjamin Hallowell, a Boston merchant. Benjamin Vaughan (1751-1835), William Vaughan (1752-1850), John Vaughan (1756-1841), Charles Vaughan (1759-1839), and Samuel Vaughan, Jr. (1762-?) were sons of Samuel and Sarah Vaughan. The Vaughan brothers and extended Vaughan family were merchants, landowners, authors, and politicians, some with ties to Benjamin Franklin, the American Philosophical Society, and the Franklin Institute.
