Scope and Content

The bulk of the collection consists of handwritten medical journals and notebooks. There are lecture notes on pathology and other medical subjects, and several undated journals with laboratory data concerning cobra venom and serum. Also included is a journal with patient histories from the Cook County Hospital, notes on pneumonia, and notes on lens immune recations and liver literature. There are also typed lecture notes and reports as well as scientific drawings which seem to be from Kyes' students. In addition, there is miscellaneous correspondence and printed ephemera.

Biographical/Historical Note

Preston Kyes was born on January 24, 1875 in North Jay, Maine, to Ebenezer and Caroline Cooledge Kyes. He prepared for college at Wilton Academy, then graduated "Cum laude" from Bowdoin in 1896. After receiving his M.D. from John Hopkins in 1900, Kyes taught anatomy, pathology, and preventive medicine at the Medical School of the University of Chicago, becoming professor emeritus in 1940. He was also associated with the Memorial Institute for Infectious Diseases in Chicago, and the Royal Prussian Institute for Experimental Therapy in Frankfurt, Germany. Kyes had a teaching fellowship at Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research in New York City from 1902-1906, and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Bowdoin in 1921. He also wrote articles of original research, and edited scientific publications. Preston Kyes died at his home in North Jay on December 27, 1948. He was survived by his wife and several cousins.
