Scope and Contents

Two scrapbooks containing documents, photographs, newspaper clippings and correspondence concerning Albert Abrahamson's life. There is material about Abrahamson as a Bowdoin student and professor, but the bulk of the scrapbooks are newspaper clippings about Abrahamson's work in government and charitable organizations.

Biographical / Historical

Albert "Jim" Abrahamson was born in Portland, Maine on November 4, 1905. He attended Portland High School and was graduated summa cum laude from Bowdoin College in 1926. After receiving an M.A. from Columbia University, Abrahamson joined the Bowdoin faculty in 1928 as an instructor in economics, becoming a full professor in 1947. He was named George Lincoln Skolfield, Jr. Professor of Economics in 1958, a position he held until his retirement in 1976, was chairman of the department from 1955-1961, and Dean of the Faculty in 1969-1970. In 1969 Abrahamson was the recipient of the Bowdoin Alumni Award for Faculty and Staff, and in 1971 received an honorary doctor of science degree from Bowdoin. Abrahamson authored numerous government reports, contributed to publications in his field, and interrupted his teaching career to serve in a variety of governmental and charitable positions. The positions Abrahamson held include among others, economist with the President's Committee on Price Policy, 1934-1935; Works Progress Administration (WPA) administrator for Maine, 1935-1937; executive director of the Jewish Occupational Council in New York, 1939-1940; executive director of the National Refugee Service in New York, 1941-1943; assistant executive director of the War Refugee Board in Washington, 1944-1945; economist for the United Jewish Appeal, 1955; consultant for the National Manpower Commission, 1955-1962; and consultant to the National Science Foundation, 1965-1970. Albert Abrahamson died on February 24, 1988 in Falmouth, Maine.
