Robert “Bob” Gooch Rouillard, born May 17, 1899 in Kennebunk, Maine, was the first son of George Frederic and Ellen Marie Rouillard. He attended Bowdoin from 1918-1919, leaving to be a commercial radio operator on sea-going voyages to Europe and South America. After teaching French at Harvard (1925-1927) and at Amherst College (1927-1937), he joined the faculty of the University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where he remained until his retirement in 1972. Clarence Dana Rouillard authored or edited a number of publications and received various honors, including an honorary Doctor of Letters from Bowdoin in 1964. He was married in 1928 to Harriet Page Lane, who died in 1987.
