Scope and Content
Letters to Pauline Root from her father, mother, and brothers, 1903-1938, though letters from friends and miscellaneous letters are included. Pauline's father wrote to her while he was away at mining sites and her family wrote to her when she was in New York City with her aunt and uncle. Many of the letters from her mother are to Pauline as a young woman and in the early years of her marriage. There are also three diaries and a poetry notebook kept by Pauline while she was in high school. The diaries tell about family, friends, school, and social activities.

Biographical/Historical Note
Pauline Dikeman was born in 1901 to James Morrison Dikeman and Irma Worth Dikeman. She had two younger brothers, Worth Havens Dikeman and James M. Dikeman, Jr. As a mining engineer, Pauline's father traveled extensively, working in the western United States, Mexico and Rhodesia. In her early teens, Pauline spent a year in New York City with her aunt and uncle, Horace and Pauline Hamlin, returning to her home in California for high school and college. In 1932 Pauline married William Campbell Root, who taught chemistry at Bowdoin from 1932 until his death in 1969.
