Scope and Content

This collection contains research material collected by Robert Gallagher for a biography of Thomas Brackett Reed, Bowdoin class of 1860. Reed served as the speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1889-1891 and 1895-1899. The collection includes photocopies of speeches and articles by Reed, as well as photocopies of articles about Reed. There are photocopies of the Congressional Record, the New York Times, the Washington Post, and other newspapers, as well as photocopies of records from the Maine legislature and the Massachusetts Historical Society. Letters to Gallagher indicate that some of the material was gathered in the early 1970's.
