Scope and Content

The collection contains typed lecture notes, 1926-1929, chiefly in the natural sciences, compiled by Spear while a student at Bowdoin College. Also included are Spear's lab notes, a research paper, and examination questions, 1923-1931.

Biographical/Historical Note

Ellis Spear III was born on July 11, 1905, in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, the son of Ellis Spear (Bowdoin Class of 1898) and grandson of Ellis Spear (Bowdoin Class of 1858). Spear was graduated from Bowdoin College in 1929 after preparatory work at Huntington Prep School. He received a master of arts degree from Harvard University in 1932 and was an assistant in the Department of Psychology at Harvard until 1934. Spear then taught at several schools in Massachusetts including the Cambridge School and the Nursery Training School of Boston, later the Eliot-Pearson School of Tufts College. From 1957 until his retirement in 1970, Spear taught at Lesley College, Cambridge, and for many years taught at the University of Maine while summering in Warren, Maine. Ellis Spear died on January 31, 1991, in Rockland, Maine, after a long illness.
