Scope and Content

The collection contains papers, chiefly correspondence of Edward Augustus Dana and the Nye family (especially Eliza (Nye) Hathaway,Amelia (Nye) Jones and Thomas (Nye). Bowdoin College themes, essays, translations, term bills, and other material belonging to Edward Dana (Class of 1838) are included.

Biographical/Historical Note

Edward Augustus Dana, son of Nathaniel and Mary (Blanchard) Dana,was born November 3, 1818 in Portland, and prepared for college at Phillips Academy. He graduated from Bowdoin in 1838, where he was a member of the Peucinican Society. Dana practiced law in Nashua, New Hampshire from 1841-1844 and in Boston from 1844-1861. Soon after the beginning of the Civil War he retired from the practice of law and devoted his time to inventions, especially projectiles and explosives for rifled cannon. In 1862 he married Eliza Nye Hathaway of New Bedford, Massachusetts. From 1875 Dana resided in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, where he died on March 29, 1897, survived by his wife and two daughters, Misses Grace and Edith Dana.
