Scope and Content

Artwork, clippings, lecture notes, typescripts, reviews, notices, exhibition catalogs, and related materials by and concerning Howard Warshaw. Original artwork includes approximately 200 pen-and-ink drawings, oil paintings, works in gouache, watercolors, and engravings. A digital copy of the "Howard Warshaw Notebook" (on compact discs) includes image files of Warshaw artwork and text files with a Warshaw biography/bibliography. There are also copies of material held by the Howard Warshaw Estate including letters, notes, articles, manuscripts, and images of his work. Three monographs by Warshaw, Los Angeles Art Community: Group Portrait (1977); Drawings on Drawing: a Graphic Reflection of the Language of Drawing (1981); and Drawings of the Watergate Hearings (1973), have been separated from the Howard Warshaw Papers and added to the book collections of Bowdoin College.

Biographical/Historical Note

Howard Raphael Warshaw (1920-1977) was born in New York City in 1920. He died in 1977 at the age of 56. He attended Pratt Institute and at age 11 was invited to study at the National Academy of Design. By 18 he was auditing classes at Columbia University, studying at the Art Students League and exhibiting his work. In 1950, Warshaw took a teaching position at the University of Iowa, followed by a position at the Jepson Art Institute in Los Angeles. The bulk of his teaching career was at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Warshaw spent the fall of 1969 as a visiting professor of art at Bowdoin College. Besides teaching, he exhibited his paintings and became known for his murals, including Deposition and the Daily News (1969), which hangs in the Franklin Pierce Reading Room at Bowdoin College Library. During his life Warshaw gained national recognition, and prominent museums collected his work. The Smithsonian Institution's Archives of American Art and the University of California, Santa Barbara, have extensive Warshaw holdings.
