Daniel F. Hanley collection

Daniel Francis Hanley was born on March 27, 1916, in Amesbury, Massachusetts, and was a member of the Bowdoin Class of 1939, beginning a long and close affiliation with Bowdoin. Having received his M.D. from Columbia in 1943, he served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1944 to 1946 and was awarded a Bronze Star and Army Commendation Medal. Hanley was acting Bowdoin College physician from 1946-1948 and Bowdoin College physician from 1948 until his retirement in 1980. While serving the College, Hanley also was the executive director of the Maine Medical Association and editor of its Maine Medical Journal from 1956 until 1980. He was the chief physician for the U.S. Olympic teams in Rome (1960), in Winnipeg (1963), in Tokyo (1964), and in Grenoble and Mexico (1968), as well as chief medical advisor for the 1972 and 1976 Olympics. Hanley was the U.S. representative to and a permanent member of the Medical Commission of the International Olympic Committee and deputy chairman of the International Association of Olympic Medical Officers. A recognized expert in the field of sports medicine, Hanley was inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame in 1977. In 1971 he received Bowdoin's Alumni Award for Faculty and Staff, and in 1980 was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Science.

Hanley married Maria Benoit Hanley in 1948 and had four children: Daniel Jr., Sheila, Sharon and Sean (Bowdoin Class of 1976). He died on May 6, 2001, in Portland.
