Scope and Content

The collection contains literary drafts of essays, books, and other writings. Among the drafts are "Compression Wood," "A Snapping Turtle in June," Horry and the Waccamaw, and Confluence: Merrymeeting Bay. Also included are notes and correspondence concerning his writings, and Burroughs' curriculum vitae.

Biographical/Historical Note

Franklin Gorham Burroughs, Jr. was born in Conway, South Carolina in 1942. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of the South in 1964, graduating magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. He received his A.M. and Ph.D. from Harvard University, in 1965 and 1970 respectively. A teaching fellow at Harvard from 1966 to 1967, Burroughs began teaching at Bowdoin in 1968, retiring in 2002 as Harrison King McCann Professor of the English Language. Many of his essays have been included in Best American Essays, and he had the lead essay in The Pushcart Prize anthology for 1988-1989. Burroughs is the author of a number of books including Billy Watson's Croker Sack (1991), Horry and the Waccamaw (1992), The River Home: A Return to the Carolina Low Country (1998), and Confluence: Merrymeeting Bay (2006). In 1994 he received a fellowship in creative non-fiction from the National Endowment for the Arts, and in 2005 Burroughs was awarded the Cecil Woods Prize for distinction in nonfiction by the Fellowship of Southern Writers.
