Scope and Content

Correspondence between members of the Hitchcock family dated between February 1867 and April 1895. Many of the letters are addressed to and from Alfred Hitchcock at boarding school prior to his matriculation at Bowdoin College. Principle correspondents during this period are his mother and father, Clara and Edward Hitchcock, and his cousin, Arthur Read of Boston. In a few of the later letters Hitchcock describes life at Bowdoin College and his time as a physician.

Biographical/Historical Note

Alfred Hitchcock was born October 3, 1859, in Strong, Maine. He was graduated from Bowdoin in 1881 and received a degree from the Medical School of Maine in 1883. Hitchcock became a physician and established a practice in Strong, Maine, from 1884-1889 and later in Farmington, Maine, from 1889-1897. He died on June 11, 1900, due to lead poisoning. He was survived by his parents and his wife, Mabel Blake. They had no children.
