Van Cleve taught history and political science at Bowdoin College from 1915 until his retirement in 1954, at which time he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters degree. His main fields of teaching and research were the Middle Ages, English constitutional history, and the history of political theory. His teaching career was interrupted by his military service in World War I and World War II as an intelligence officer.
