Biographical/Historical Note
Fred Lewis True, Jr. was born in Beverly, MA in 1923 and prepared for college at Beverly High School. He attended Bowdoin for one year before serving in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946, including three semesters as a member of the V-12 program at Bates College. After being discharged as an ensign, he returned to Bowdoin in October 1946. At the College True was a member of Alpha Tau Omega. He graduated in June 1947 (Class of 1945) and attended Harvard Law School from which he graduated in 1950. He practiced with the law firm Fingold, Rogovin, and Fingold for three years and then became an assistant attorney general for Massachusetts, in charge of the veterans' division. After working as a self-employed attorney in Georgetown, MA, from 1958 to 1963, he became a legal assistant to the Massachusetts Senate minority leader, a position from which he retired in 1987. He married Hilda Niedhoff and had one daughter. He died in Haverhill, MA in August of 1993.
