Scope and Content
Correspondence (1813-1887) between members of Nathaniel Hawthorne's family, including his sisters, mother, uncles, and aunts. The majority of the letters are to and from Elizabeth C. Hathorne, Elizabeth M. Hathorne, Mary Manning, and Maria L. Hathorne. Also includes Richard C. Manning's edited, typescript, copies (made in 1940) of letters from Elizabeth M. Hathorne (ca. 1864-1882), the originals of which were destroyed; and his typescript copies of Manning family letters (originals donated to the Essex Institute). Also contains ledger book from the Salem and Boston Stage Coach Line, owned by Richard Manning and where Hawthorne's maternal grandmother and he both worked in 1820.

Biographical/Historical Note
Elizabeth C. Manning married Captain Nathaniel Hathorne in 1801. Soon after his death at sea in 1808, Elizabeth brought her three children, Nathaniel, Elizabeth M. and Maria Louisa, to live in her mother's (Miriam Manning) house in Salem, Massachusetts; her children became wards of the Manning family. After her father's death, Elizabeth Manning's brother, Robert, became head of the Manning household. Elizabeth's living brothers and sisters: Robert, Richard, Priscilla, and Mary remained in close correspondence with Elizabeth and her children.
