Scope and Content

The collection contains lecture notes, examination bluebooks, reading notes and papers, with grades and comments by instructors, from John Ranlett's years as an undergraduate at Bowdoin College (1953-57). It includes material for all of his courses at Bowdoin with just one exception (German 3-4). In most cases, copies of course syllabi and examinations accompany Ranlett's written work. Among the professors represented by course notes are Charles Livingston (Romance Languages), Ernst Helmreich (History and Government), Samuel Kamerling (Chemistry), and William Geoghegan (Religion).

Biographical/Historical Note

John Ranlett (1935- ) was born in Boston, Massachusetts and attended high school in Bangor, Maine. He graduated summa cum laude from Bowdoin in 1957 with highest honors in History. He was a Fulbright fellow at the University of London during 1957-58 and received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1967. He served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1958-60. He was a teaching fellow at Harvard from 1962-66. In 1966, he began teaching history at the State University of New York at Potsdam, was Chair of the Department of History from 1969-74, and retired in 1997. He is the author of numerous reviews and articles, including "Checking Nature's Desecration: Late-Victorian Environmental Organization," in Victorian Studies (1983). Professor Ranlett married Judith Becker, also an historian, in 1970. He resides in Potsdam, New York.
