Scope and Content

The bulk of the collection is biographical information collected by Barbour on more than 30 graduates and faculty of the Medical School of Maine, including articles in journals and magazines, photographs, memorial tributes, and newspaper clippings. Also included are articles concerning the practice of medicine in Maine and other Maine institutions, such as the Eastern Maine Medical Center. Most of the material consists of paper and photographic copies.

Biographical/Historical Note

In 1987, Charles M. Barbour (Bowdoin Class of 1933 and Overseer Emeritus) set out to write a history of the Medical School of Maine, an integral part of Bowdoin College from 1820 until it closed in 1921. Under the guidance of Bowdoin's President, LeRoy Greason, Barbour began collecting materials relating to the Medical School and its graduates. Barbour gathered most of the materials for the history through correspondence with alumni and the family of graduates, and through his network of College contacts. In addition, there was a significant response to his newspaper and magazine postings requesting information on the medical school, its faculty, and graduates. Barbour planned to complete the history in time for the College's bicentennial anniversary in 1994, but he never reached this goal due to illness.
