Biographical/Historical Note
Samuel Upton (1784-1842) was a merchant in Castine and Belfast, Me., and Boston, Mass. His wife, Rebecca A. Upton (1779-1859), was the author of Home Studies, a housekeeping book first published 1856. They had two children, Rebecca P. Upton Allyn (d. ca.1894) and Charles Horace Upton (1812-1877). Rebecca was the wife of Rufus B. Allyn (1793-1857), a prominent lawyer in Belfast, Me. Charles was graduated from Bowdoin in 1834 and became a journalist in Fairfax County, Virginia (1835-63), a member of Congress (1861-62), and was appointed U.S. Consul in Geneva, Switzerland (1863-77) by President Lincoln.
