Scope and Content

Contains notes, addresses, and essays kept by Sherman while a student at both Bowdoin College and the Andover Theological Seminary on topics both religous and secular, as well as sermons written and delivered while a professor at Jackson College. A photograph of Sherman, and a small cache of biographical information, such as obituaries and other newspaper clippings, is also included.

Biographical/Historical Note

Joseph Sherman was born in Edgecomb, Maine, on March 3, 1800. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1826 and attended, but did not graduate from, the Maine Medical School in 1826. He received an A.M. from Bowdoin College in 1829 and later received his LL.D. from the University of Nashville. He became the principal of North Yarmouth Academy in Maine in 1826, a position he held until 1832 when he resumed his studies at the Andover Theological Seminary to become a Presbyterian minister. In 1834 Sherman was appointed professor of ancient and modern languages at Jackson College in Columbia, Tennessee, where he was president from 1843 to 1846. He died June 15, 1849, as the result of a stagecoach crash.
