Scope and Content

Contains photographs, clippings, correspondence, and ephemera. Also included in the collection are three scrapbooks (as well as folders containing material that was removed from the scrapbooks), a commonplace book, a volume containing the addresses and remarks at 1940 Waldorf-Astoria Hotel Conference of Branch Office Managers for Merrill Lynch, E. A. Pierce & Cassatt, a volume of testimonials honoring Pierce, and a commemoration of Pierce's 100th birthday. Includes one folder out of Bangor, Maine captained by A. A. Pierce and A. G. Pierce (1878-1888).

Biographical/Historical Note

Edward Allen Pierce, born in Orrington, Maine in 1874, received an honorary degree from Bowdoin in 1956. In 1901, he resigned as manager of a lumber business and took a job as a clerk for A. A. Housman & Co. By 1921, he was named a managing partner. The firm changed their name to E. A. Pierce & Co. as a tribute to Pierce. In 1940, E. A. Pierce & Co. consolidated with the banking houses of Merrill Lynch & Co. and Cassatt & Co. In 1941, Fenner & Beane joined as well to form Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith Inc. He served as director and vice president of Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith Inc. on Wall Street as well as a member of the board of directors for Dictaphone Corporation. Pierce also helped draft the Securities & Exchange Comission Law. He served on the board of the Arthritis Foundation. Pierce died in 1974.
