Biographical/Historical Note
Helen and Dana Peckworth (born 1928, 1930 respectively) come from a long line of autograph collectors. Their collection comes from the efforts of parents Howard Peckworth and Martha Dana, who maintained a close personal friendship with Martha's brother, Robert W. Dana. Robert and his father, Harold, both served as editors at the New York Herald Tribune, where they collected hundreds of Letters to the Editor with signatures attached. The collection also contains correspondence from Harold Dana's brother, Samuel Trask Dana, who served as the University of Michigan's first Dean of the Forestry School. The Dana family comes from an illustrious past, with Harold's grandfather serving as the Governor of Maine in the 19th century and several others serving Maine as national representives. Much of the family has also graduated from Bowdoin.
