Biographical/Historical Note

Harry Pierce Nichols was born on September 30, 1850 in Salem, Massachusetts to Charles Saunders and Amerlia A. (Ainsworth) Nichols. Before graduating from Harvard in 1871, Nichols attended Salem High School. Nichols then went on to study for the ministry at Andover Seminary and Philadelphia Divinity School before becoming ordained a deacon in 1876. He proceeded to have a distinguished career in the Episcopal Church, serving in parishes in Philadelphia, Brunswick, Maine, Connecticut, Minnesota, and, finally, at the Holy Trinity Church in New York City until his retirement in 1922.
