Biographical/Historical Note
Lyman Kingman Lee (Bowdoin 1892), an educator and state legislator, was born April 25, 1867 in Foxcroft, Maine to Chauncey Cleveland Lee (b. 1843, Foxcroft), an educator and farmer, and Eva A. Drake Lee, who was from Sangerville, Maine. He was educated at Foxcroft Academy (1882-88) before attending Bowdoin. Lee was Principal of Corinna Union Academy (1892-93), Thomaston High School (1893-94), Oakland Academy (1894-98), and Foxcroft Academy (1898-1903), and was Superintendent of Schools in Foxcroft (1899-1900). He was manager of Dover & Foxcroft Fuel Company (1903-20); and served in the Maine State Legislature (1945-49). From 1920 to the early 1950's, Lee also had an successful apple business, and "his orchard of 30 acres was the largest in Piscataquis County." Lee married Sarah Augusta French, a teacher, in Dover-Foxcroft, on July 2, 1895. The couple had five children: Alice (Mt. Holyoke (1922), d. 1926); Richard Henry (Bowdoin (1924), Harvard Law School (1928), d. 1986); Olive (Radcliffe 1928); Lyman Carter (Bowdoin 1930, d. ca. 1988-89); and Francis (Kent's Hill School (1928), nm Springfield College (1929), d. 1940). Both Richard and Lyman Carter Lee were attorneys in Boston and Massachusetts legislators. Richard was also author of several legal articles which appeared in Boston University Law Review, The Infantry Journal, Boston Law Journal, and DownEast Magazine. Their sister, Olive, was Librarian at Bowdoin (1954-57).
