Scope and Content

Correspondence, minutes, agenda, memos, financial statements and other records of Nathaniel Hawthorne Society officers including Rosemary Fisk, Joseph Flibbert, Rita K. Gollin, T. Walter Herbert, John L. Idol, Jr., David Kesterson, Millicent Bell, and Robert Martin. The records relate to the organization and activities of the Society, particularly its annual and biennial meetings, and journal; meeting records also include audio recordings and submissions of papers from Hawthorne scholars. Other correspondents include Gloria Erlich, Arthur Monke, Lea Newman, and Arlin Turner. The collection also includes images, chiefly copy prints of photographs of Hawthorne, his family and related locales that were donated to the Society by Raymond E. Hull, documents pertaining to Neal Smith's work as managing editor of the centenary edition, The Letters/Nathaniel Hawthorne (Ohio State University Press, c1984-c1987), and material for the project "Prophetic Pictures."

Biographical/Historical Note

The Nathaniel Hawthorne Society was established in 1974 at the Modern Language Association convention and held its first symposium at Bowdoin College in the fall of 1976. The Society is dedicated to the study of the life and works of Nathaniel Hawthorne and publishes a refereed journal, the Nathaniel Hawthorne Review. Meetings are held twice yearly at the Modern Language Association (MLA) annual convention and the American Literature Association (ALA) annual conference; the Society's biennial meeting is held at locations important to Hawthorne's life and work.
