Scope and Content

This collection includes correspondence, domestic documents, bills and receipts, newspaper clippings, biographical materials on Benjamin Hale, and genealogical materials, as well as an album featuring autographs of prominent individuals, including John Quincy Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and Napoleon.

Biographical/Historical Note

Benjamin Hale was born on November 23, 1797, in Newbury, Massachusetts. He was a tutor of natural philosophy and metaphysics at Bowdoin (1820-1822) and was librarian of the Medical School of Maine (1821-1822). After leaving Bowdoin, he served as principal of Gardiner Lyceum (1822-1827), professor of chemistry and mineralogy at Dartmouth College (1827-1835), and president of Geneva [now Hobart] College (1836-1858). Hale was ordained an Episcopal minister in 1831.

Mary C.K. Hale (1799-1867) was the niece of Rufus King, lawyer and Federalist statesman, and William King (1768-1852), the first governor of the State of Maine. Benjamin and Mary married in 1823 and had two children. Benjamin Hale died July 15, 1863, in Newburyport. More information on the King family is available through the papers of Cyrus King.
