Ebenezer Dole, Jr., a philosophical writer and poet, was born ca. 1815 in Hallowell, Maine, to Ebenezer, a merchant, and Hannah Balch Dole. Dole, a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the Peucinian Society, was graduated from Bowdoin College in 1835 and served as principal of Hebron Academy from 1835-1836. He studied for the ministry at Bangor Theological Seminary, but after being graduated from there in 1839, he was known to have preached only one sermon before deciding not to pursue the calling any further.
