Scope and Content

The Charles S. Daveis Papers contain correspondence (1808-1864), much of it on college business; addresses for the laying of the cornerstone for King Chapel at Bowdoin College (July 16, 1845), the inauguration of President Woods (1839), and Women and Literature (given at Harvard, 1844); and miscellaneous documents. Daveis was also an agent for the non-resident proprietors of Maine lands, and there are letters and documents (1825-1827) relating to this in the collection.

Biographical/Historical Note

Charles Stewart Daveis (Bowdoin 1807) was born on May 10, 1788. His father had served as captain during the American Revolution and was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati. Daveis prepped at Andover Academy before entering Bowdoin in 1803 at the age of fifteen. He was graduated with the second graduating class from the College. In 1815 he married Elizabeth Taylor Gilman, daughter of Governor Nicholas Gilman of Exeter, New Hampshire. They had four children: Gilman (Bowdoin 1837), a physician in Portland; Edward Henry (Bowdoin 1838), a lawyer and businessman in Portland; Mary, who married Rev. David G. Haskins of Cambridge, Mass.; and Anna, who married Charles Jones of Portland. Daveis studied law under Nicholas Emery (Bowdoin Overseer 1813-1817); he then practiced in Portland, specializing in admiralty law. Later, he became United States Agent to Holland (1829) and a member of the Maine Senate (1841). Daveis also served as Bowdoin Overseer (1816-1837), Vice-President of the Board (1829-1837), and Trustee (1837-1864). Charles Stewart Daveis died March 29, 1865.
