Biographical/Historical Note
Descended from an ancient English family settled in the counties of Kent and Sussex, William Curtis came to New England in 1632 aboard the "Lion." His great-grandson, David Curtis, became the first of his family to move to Maine, settling in Harpswell about 1744 with his wife Bethia Sprague of Duxbury, Massachusetts. The couple had six children, the most prominent being Nehemiah Curtis, a militia commander before and during the Revolutionary War, and many descendants throughout Freeport and Harpswell, including Captain William Curtis.
